Sidecar/Airplay

I just realize there is topic for macOS Catalina, sorry about that. Don't know how to move my post to that topic area or remove this post.

I am trying to use my iPad Pro (2018) as an external monitor for my MacBook Pro (2019). Both have software updates such as iOS 13 and Catalina installed, both are connected with the same Apple ID. I tried to connect the iPad by USB type C that came with the iPad Pro as well as the laptop, but Airplay did not pop up on the top bar. In system preferences, Sidecar show "No Devices." I access the display preference and it shows in Airplay display is off and "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available" is checked. So Sidecar and Airplay do not detect my iPad Pro.

Here are a few things that I tried to troubleshoot and none of them work:

  • Signing out on both devices and sign back in with the same Apple ID
  • Turning off firewall
  • Use different type of cables
  • Both connected through the same wifi
  • Made sure everything is updated

I check my iCloud account and both devices are signed in.

I though this would be just plug and play, simple. I might of miss some step but any input would be great even if I have done those steps.

Many thanks!

The main issue was with Handoff on my iPad. When I reset Handoff on my iPad the Airplay pop up on my MacBook Pro menu bar this.

The step I took was turning off and on my iPad and MacBook Pro which did the trick, I wasn't even aware about the Handoff feature. Now it works for wired and wireless

Again thank you so much you really made everything easier for me!

Hey there WhisperingWisp,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. I understand you’re having some issues using Sidecar as expected. You’ve done some great troubleshooting on this so far and I’ll be happy to help.

I understand this is not working over a wired connection, just to isolate the issue, have you tried wirelessly using this feature? If not, give that a go using the steps in this link and see if works:

Use your iPad as a second display for your Mac with Sidecar

Restart both devices as well.

Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

How to turn your Mac on or off

Turn Handoff off and back on for both devices, this link has info on how to do this:

Use Handoff to continue a task on your other devices

Turn Bluetooth off and back on as well. On your Mac you can do this in System Preferences > Bluetooth. On your iPad, go to Settings > Bluetooth.

Make sure this isn’t related to your user permissions by resetting them with this:

Resolve issues caused by changing the permissions of items in your home folder

If you still have issues after that, test it in a new Admin user account and see if that works:

How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

Let us know if this helps.

Cheers
