Filtering Apple Music in Catalina by Genre or Album

In iTunes, you could filter by genre, artist, or album using the drop-down menu in the "songs" view of your library. With the filter search option in the new Mac Music app, it you can only search. For instance, I want to see all songs in a particular genre or album. I can search for that, but it will show other results.

What happened to the filtering feature from iTUnes?

Yes, I see that. The problem is that the filter field is just searching for whatever I type, and if I type in a Genre like "Pop," then it will include songs with "Pop" in the title that aren't in the Genre "Pop." There was a functionality in iTunes where you could see a list of genres, artists, albums, etc. in a particular playlist, and then click on one of those to filter.

What happened to that functionality?

Agreed. Having used the temporary and inexplicably hidden filter, it's a poor substitute for the browser and all search functions that iTunes offered. There was no reason to remove these functions, and filter is infuriation. Setting aside its obvious limitations, it doesn't stay open, and must be reactivated each and every time one enters the selected view (i.e., Songs).

I've also discovered that if working in Songs, you don't want to check the Up Next list -- It obliterates the view you're in, however you had it organized, and displays the Up Next dropdown only in the context of every single song in your library.

After looking at Up Next, one is required to rebuild their prior search results from scratch. Baffling, inexcusable. Way to make listening to music much, much more difficult.

Absurd, the only decent display in Itunes was the playlist with the menu that proposed the filters by genre Artist and Album. 2 years of work to fix everything in the best possible way with Tag etc. and now with Music it is even impossible to perform a search without losing the point where you were in the playlist. In the search result you cannot even view the Info with the DX button, and then there is that miserable filter that doesn't even remain in the display. Everything to be redone. If I'm in the iTunes Store I can't search for a song in the local library without losing the point of where I was. Everything I do I realize the smallness of this MUSIC. Well upgrade and lighten Itunes, but you have destroyed it here.

Many protests must be made to Apple.

This new program requires us to turn the iTunes Store "on" using our Preferences. Once we "turn it on," it will appear in the sidebar, and magically appear in that search window. It makes no sense, and there's no indication that this is required, and I had to find it by searching other websites because Apple Support couldn't tell me where it was -- in fact, they thought its absence was a glitch in my installation. Also, if you do a search in iTunes and then go back to whatever list you were in, i.e., Songs, you'll notice that it obliterates the results were you just working in and it will hide the filter option. That means we have to re-activate "filter" under multiple circumstances, including, even, looking at what's on the up-next list. Try it.

I didn't run through the 100+ replies before me, if any one has talked about this, then please allow me to stress this again, because it can never be overstated, that the fine control in iTunes is what set it apart from other music managers.

On the other hand, I guess this is like when Apple introduces Photos app on Mac. When it was first launched and replaced iPhoto and Aperture, many key features that people love about those two apps were gone. Fortunately, they managed to added those features back progressively. Let's just hope the process will not take long for the music sector this time.

People, we're NOT talking about the new, basic "Filter" search bar (access by View>Show Filter Field & Shift-Command-F), or the simplified Library>Edit>Genres search on the side bar that groups songs with giant album artwork. This is about the "COLUMN BROWSER" that was in iTunes where you can refine your searches using columns of criteria, instead of just general keyword searches.

Thank you.

Like many of the users here, I too would like Apple to return these filtering features. As a music historian with 70GB of my own music hard-stored on my computer, it's infuriating to not be able to find something I own. What's the point of having a library without a reliable organization system that enables fast, intuitive methods of retrieval? Very disappointed in this "update," which merely seems like a ploy to get people to subscribe to Apple's streaming service. Also, what the **** happed to my purchased list?! I've spent nearly $3,000 in the iTunes store over the last fifteen years and all the sudden my purchase history disappears?! I can view it in the iTunes Store window, but it buffers endlessly. I bought these songs. They're on my device. SHOW THEM TO ME. Finally, why do songs I share with Music from GarageBand disappear from their playlists within 60 seconds? This app is such a Lemon. How do you call a buggy program with severely limited search abilities an "update?" Please attend to these issues, Apple!
