Can't use earbuds as sound input

I'm trying to use the microphone on my earbuds as sound input for Skype calls. But in System Preferences -> Sound -> Input, I see only "MacBook Pro Microphone" (and some Loopback options). Under Output, "External Headphones" is selected. Should that also be an option listed under Input? Thanks.

MacBook Pro recognises the microphone as a pair of headphones I have a microphone that connects via headphone jack. When I plug it in to my mid 2012 13'macbook pro it recognises the microphone as a pair of headphones. Then when I go into "input" section in system preferences the only option that comes up is the laptops internal microphone. I don't believe the microphone is defective as it works on my windows desktop fine. Is there any way to get it to work on my macbook? [Re-Titled by Moderator]

how to switch to external microphone on macbook pro 2020 is there a way to swith to external audio on the MacBook Pro 2020.. The sound settings does not provide an alternative to the built-in microphone.
