I have the same error as many others on here.

Keep getting error 21 when trying to restore my bricked iPhone 3GS. Tried all the suggestions on here....

..re-install itunes
..delete software update and download it again
..use recboot

I also am not running any firewall software, like Douglas I am also a bit dubious about the Error 21.

If anyone has any other suggestions, please let me know!

Thanks Matt!!! your a genius you solved error 21!!

This worked for me was a dodgey download of the software as well. When I removed the orginal package, then downloaded again worked 1st time!! my package had downloaded to a slightly diffent diffrent location guess cos I'm running xp.

Hi all,

Reading through this discussion has been helpful to me as I also had a problem when performing the 4.0.1 update on my iPhone 4. I've never had a problem before with updates so was rather surprised.

I got the initial Error 21 error, then tried a restore but that failed with Error 9. Tried a different USB port on my hub that is running off the iMac and got another Error 9, so took advice from here and restarted the Mac, connected the USB cable directly to the iMac and tried once more. Phew! It worked.

I then restored all my settings etc from backup - which took awhile - and I'm now back and working a few hours after trying to do the update. What a pain.

I've actually moved my cable back to the hub and it's syncing okay so maybe I'll directly connect it only in the future when doing big updates like this.

Hope this helps someone else. Good luck to those that are having problems. It's a bloomin' horrible feeling not having your phone up and running.

Yesterday I dedcided to upgrade my iPhone 4 to the new 4.0.1 firmware. I backed up my phone, and proceded to upgrade. However, the process stalled and put my phone into recovery mode. I fixed this by installing itunes on another PC and upgraded there. Success!

However, when I go to my old PC to restore from backup, it doesnt work. This PC was having trouble staying connected to the internet, so I moved the PC and connceted it to the internet with a wired connection. The backup process gets to about 50% and just sits there, and the time reamining on the backup keeps counting up. One time I tried it, it said 3 hours, another it said 1 hour. I did try to move my backup from this pc to another, but when i was moving it, it said that the file located on my G drive was no longer there. This Iphone had nothing on it that would tie to my G drive, so Im not sure what is causing that, or why the backup is looking at that drive. The backup is stored on my C drive.

Would this prevent the backup from going through? I really don't want to lose my texts, and contact info.

My iphone had like 14 gigs of stuff on it, maybe that is why the restore is taking so long. Im just feeling sick that I may lose all this stuff, even though the backup is on my pc. Any suggestions?

You have a USB problem on your computer. There are many possibilities; you may be using a hub instead of a direct connection; if you are using a direct connection on a desktop computer you may be use a port on the front instead of the back (front ports are frequently a hub internally); you may have other power-hungry USB devices connected, or devices using fast transfers that are overloading the bus; your ports may be version 1.1 instead of 2.0; your antivirus may be monitoring the USB and either slowing it down or interfering; your USB drivers may be out of date.

Try by verifying the current version of USB drivers, reboot your computer, disconnect as many USB devices as possible, use the right ports, disable your antivirus and firewall.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will try that. I tried doing it in the USB ports in front but had other stuff connected, including my wireless internet hub. When i hooked the PC up wired to the internet, i disconnected every usb device except for the mouse and keyboard, which were plugged into the front. I will move those to the back and try the front.

Did you understand what I was saying about the G drive, would that cause the Restore to hang? Files on the G drive are no longer available however.
