Apps not seeing my Concept2 rower connected to USB.

I have an older Concept2 rower with the PM3 electronics that I have been using for years with the macOS apps RowPro and the Concept2 Utility. After upgrading to Catalina, neither of the two apps detects the Rower.

I know that the O/S is seeing the rower, because when I plug it into the USB, VMware Fusion asks whether I want to connect the USB to macOS or to the Windows VM and the Windows versions of RowPro and the Concept2 Utility running in the VM are able to connect to the Rower. Normally, the VM is not running when I use the rower; this was just a test.

Therefore, I am pretty sure that the issue is that the two apps, which were both downloaded from the developers' websites, need to be given permission to access the USB connected rower. However, I haven't discovered how to grant them access via System Preferences. Perhaps there's a configuration file I can edit or a command I can run in the Terminal to give me the necessary permission.

Thanks.

Same issue. Very frustrating. I emailede RowPro support after confirming issues with Concept2 (I have a PM5 on my rower). Received the following response:

"As you've found, macOS 10.15 Catalina has broken the connection to the

Concept2 PM, due to a mistake on Apple's part.

Apple is replacing the USB connection in macOS (called IOKit) with a new one

(called DriverKit). When Apple releases the next macOS update in 9 months

or so, all apps like RowPro and the Concept Utility that used IOKit will

need to use DriverKit instead.

Apple intended for IOKit to still work in MacOS 10.15 Catalina to give

developers time to make the switch, but sadly it doesn't work, hence this

problem.

Concept2 has reported the problem to Apple. Apple may or may not put out an

update with a fix, but who knows how long that might be. So rather than

wait, we're working with Concept2 to develop as quickly as we can a PM

driver that uses DriverKit.

We're not sure yet how long that might take, possibly weeks. It will of

course require a new release of RowPro (and all other apps like the Concept2

Utility that connect to a Concept2 PM).

So in summary, you'll need to wait for either a Catalina update from Apple

that fixes the IOKit issue, or wait for the next release of RowPro which

will be based on DriverKit and hence will work with Catalina.

Sorry for the major nuisance caused by this issue. Needless to say we're

working as fast as we can to resolve it.

I'll put you on the list to inform of progress."

I hope they are able to turn this around quickly and Apple is supportive.

Morning- see below from rowpro

Hi Jim,

Several other users have reported this same issue and we’re working on it right now.

The Concept2 Utility has the same issue, and we’re working with Concept2 towards a solution.

Not sure of the timeline, but we’ll go as fast as we can. We’re aiming for days not weeks if at all possible.

In the meantime, neither RowPro nor the Concept2 Utility will work with macOS Catalina.

Sorry for the nuisance this is causing, and I’ll let you know as soon as we know more.

I am having the same issue as you. using macbook pro 2018 (4 thunderbolt ports). Have a pm5 and was using a usb b to c - no joy with either concept 2 utility and rowpro 5.3 - post update neither works and did get additional cable just to check.

Using wife's old macbook pro using mojave and usb b to a cable however program worked just fine.

Apple support says short of program fix from both or either that you would have to wipe and reinstall.

best,

jim

Unfortunately, no. I sent a note to RowPro last week telling them they should update their product page because it falsely States that their software works best on the lastest iOS version, which is bad for obvious reasons.

Concept2 firmware update page still has original message regarding the issue posted on 10/1/2019.

None of these companies, including Apple, are doing a good job of keeping consumers up to date on progress including on social media. Both Concept2 and RowPro indicate this was an unplanned technical issue caused by Apple with their recent software update.

I had contacted both Pete at RowProw and Scott at Concept2 and have sent Scott system info and logs for the Concept2 Utility that he requested.

My PM3 is correctly connecting to the USB because when I run VMware Fusion, both RowPro and the Concept2 Utility running in the Windows VM connect to the PM3. My conclusion is that the VMware virtualizer connects to the rower because it has permissions needed to access to the USB that macOS versions of RowPro doesn’t have. It seems likely that they just have to learn how to configure Catalina to allow access, which hopefully doesn’t require an update to the O/S by Apple.

My judgement, from too much bad experiences, is that it’s an issue caused by new security features in Catalina. I’m doing some tests requested by a programmer at Concept2. Since they seem both competent and motivated to find the answer, apparently unlike the person you spoke with at Apple Support, I expect they’ll come up with the fix and I will post it here then.
