Getting BT Smart Hub 2 to work with Airport Base Station, Airport Express, Apple TV

Hi All,

I currently have an old BT router. From it I run an ethernet cable into my Airport Base Station. From the Base Station via wifi I run an Apple TV, Airport Express, HP printer, all in different rooms of the house.

I've just signed up for super fast broadband and will shortly take delivery of a BT Smart Hub 2. Does anyone know if the Smart Hub 2 can be used as a simple router, so that my existing setup, which works perfectly if a bit slow, can be retained? Or are there other ways to get my setup working with the Smart Hub 2?

I'm hoping an Apple Ninja can clarify this for me.

Thanks.

Hi again,

The BT Hub 2 and wifi disks have arrived and I I thought I'd try to touch base with you before connecting them.

My broadband comes into the house at socket from which a connection goes directly into the existing modem. From the modem there's an ethernet out that goes to an upstairs room where it connects to the ethernet port of an Apple Base Station. From there, via wifi, I run an Apple TV in a downstairs room, and Apple Extreme in a cupboard in a different downstairs room, and a printer. That's my current set up.

I think the first thing I have to do is:

  1. Unhook the current modem from the broadband wall socket
  2. Feed the broadband signal from the wall socket into the appropriate port on the new Hub2 with the supplied cable.
  3. This bit I'm not so clear about: put the Hub 2 address and password (which is on the underside of the new device) into my MacBook OSX Network Preferences?
  4. The Hub 2 instruction say the next thing to do is activate the wifi disks which as far as I can tell are simply a kind of wifi signal booster so perhaps this could be left until last so as to get everything else working with Hub 2 first?
  5. If we skip step 4 then perhaps the next thing would be to connect the existing ethernet cable to the out port on the Hub 2, the other end will still be connected to the ethernet in port on the Apple Base Station upstairs?
  6. Then possibly back to OSX Network Preferences to configure it to work with the Apple TV, Apple Extreme, printer? If so and it all works that would just leave step 4, which was skipped early - connecting the wifi booster disk.

Superfast fibre broadband is due to come online late on Friday but the notification email said to connect the Hub 2 to the regular broadband as soon as it arrives.

Thank you in advance

Regards,

K

Thank you so much for that very encouraging response to my query.

I’d be perfectly happy to use the new BT hub as the core of my home Wi-fi network and the other Apple products as peripherals. For example I have the Airport Express in a cupboard attached to my hi-fi system, with loudspeakers in other rooms. My current set up means I can be in the room that has the best loudspeakers and can send the audio from my MacBook to the Apple express/hi-fi cupboard And listen back through my best speakers.

i look forward to any advice you might have once the kit arrives if I can’t work it out myself.

thanks again for taking the time to reply.
