Apple Pencil in Support Communities

This is a rather insignificant issue, but remains a mild irritation. I often use my iPad Pro 11 and Apple Pencil 2 when interacting with the Apple Support Communities. I've found certain buttons, links and especially close boxes won't respond to being selected by the Apple Pencil -- I'm forced to resort to my low tech finger (ver. 1.0 !) I notice it primarily in my Profile where there are a lot of pop up 'boxes' as opposed to 'pages'.

As I said this is not a huge issue, but when I'm 'Penciling' I don't think about what works and what doesn't, I assume everything should work as it does elsewhere, so I click several times before remembering it doesn't work here (slightly ironic that the Apple Pencil has trouble in the Apple Forum).

Here's an example of a close box that does not work with the Pencil 2 (but does work with Finger 1).

No, I have not used the pencil here, no need for it. I use it mostly for artwork. There are specific apps mentioned that it will work with and I am not sure that a browser is one of them. Although this does not mention a browser, but everything I have seen mentions drawing or other apps like Notes or photos or mail - no mention of browsers and I don't think they are designed for that. Best option is to ask Apple directly. And, how can you mark up a web page that scrolls up/down at the touch of a finger?

OK.

Apple has authored the ASC SiteWare from scratch - rolled out early December 2018

There are many bugs & glitches - still "a work in progress" so to speak

There are different "kinds" of "controls" - regular HTML links & javascript

Furthermore, the "badge system" that your image illustrates is a 3rd party add-on from Badgville Inc. - a product called "Social Fabric"

Social Fabric is a service launched by Badgeville in September 2011. It is designed to increase user engagement and loyalty. It was offered to clients as a SaaS to allow websites to include social networking elements. Social Fabric offers activity stream based on an algorithm that contextualizes it to the user's activities, interests, and friends. Social Fabric also provides notifications and alerts.

What the Apple software 'engineers' will require to deal with your issues is an example of every single occurrence that you can identify with all these elements reported

  • Screenshot annotated
  • URL of page
  • a "story" of every action taken to arrive at the "screenshot" with the dead "control"

Thank you for testing. So to be clear, from a page like the one we’re on:

  • You click on your profile icon (a guitar for me)
  • A mini-profile pop up window appears which includes a close ‘X’ button
  • You can click the X with the Apple Pencil and the pop-up closes?

(Interestingly, it seems the ‘Profile’ button on this page, which didn’t use to work for me, now works. I’ll have to again find all the places it doesn’t work)

If so, can I ask which model iPad and Pencil you’re testing with to help narrow down my issue? Safari I assume?

I use 'stock' iPadOS 13 and Safari (though it also had this problem before 13), if my setup isn't compatible they should go back to the drawing board, but I also haven't had problems elsewhere and doubt this is the case. I will search further, but don't see any compatibility information in the link you posted.

Are you saying that you (or others) CAN use an Apple Pencil in the Support forums without issue? I hesitate to check with Apple as I believe this is an issue with the Web site or coding in the pop up boxes (it took me an hour to get escalated to someone helpful the other day on an Airport Utility issue), but I can look for a feedback link for the Forum itself if you don't think it's been reported.

Edit: For grins I'll try Chrome

Edit 2: Nope, Chrome doesn't work either

Yes, thank you, I know you want to close this. I don’t find it bothersome enough to spend time on the phone, and will just hope someone with a Pencil will actually try. It literally takes less than 10 seconds for someone to click on their profile icon/picture, and use an Apple Pencil to click on the ‘close box’ or ‘View Profile’ button in the pop up window that appears. I would think most people visiting here use a browser, most have no other option.

So the easiest way for me to reproduce the issue can be done right here. If I click on any of our profile names or pictures a profile pop up box appears, in that box there are a number of links, none of them work with my Pencil. This includes each ‘Specialty Icon’, the ‘More specialties’ link, the ‘Awards’ icons, the ‘PERSONAL SETTINGS’ links, the ‘View Profile’ button and the Close X. These all work with my finger.

It’s interesting that this does not seem to affect older iPads using the Pencil 1. I just remembered that at work my wife has the same setup as me, iPad Pro 11 w/Pencil 2, I can have her see if she can duplicate this.

So the primary problem seems to be the ‘Badgeville’ product mentioned, I’ll try to find other occurrences and contact support when time allows.
