Using external mic when recording video?

This contains a special tripod and microphone designed for use with video logging. It's a bit expensive but you can probably get it from other sources such as B&H Photo or Sweetwater although they seem to have the same price. I think I saw it for a lower price at the Apple Store.

Any microphone that you plug in should be used as the audio input for all applications, according to a person at the Apple Store.

Go to System Preferences and go to the Sound Control Panel. If you click input on the top row of buttons, you should see a list of sources for sound input. Does the Yeti appear there if you connect it? If so, just click on the line for the Yeti and it should use that for recording sound for all applications.

If you want to use an XLR microphone, you need to use an audio interface that provides phantom power. (If the microphone doesn't use phantom power, which is the third pin, there are adapters to connect XLR to the plain audio jacks.) Look at https://focusrite.com for some examples.
