Is it possible to access the photos on my computer?
Yes. Use the Photos app that comes with the OS and replaced iPhoto more than 4 years ago.
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch Photos. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and point at your iPhoto Library. It will do the rest.

Thanks!! It worked and I was able to recover my photos. I do realize that iPhoto was discontinued but still enjoyed the platform, ease of use and familiarity. Was not thinking about it when I upgraded... I really should have known better. As long as I have my recovered photos I'm happy.
