You can increase the RAM to a total of 8, 16, or 32GB depending on which model you have, but this won't enable it to run newer versions of the OS than it currently can.

Your computer can't run an OS higher than El Capitan(or High Sierra if it's a Late 2009 model) or any software which requires a newer OS than that.
