"error while printing" when printing a document from Preview as pdf or mail

It doesn't have anything to do with 32 bit and 64 bit, it has do with Preview *and* vendor drivers. Using the same driver in other applications doesn't exhibit this error when saving to PDF.

I tried resetting my SMC, resetting the print system, and there was an update to Catalina. None of these solved the issue. I can still export as .pdf, then drag the .pdf into a mail window, but the "send in mail" or "send in Messages" was so handy. I hope it will be restored. And the flow works fine when the source is Safari or Pages, for instance. It seems that Preview is the problem.

These are work-arounds, not solutions. Send in Mail from the Print dialog box opens a compose mail window from every other application, why does it fail in Preview? The functionality used to be there in Preview, and I used it multiple times a day. Now I can get an SMS authentication code filled in automatically (thanks for that) but I lose that time saved when I have to leave Preview, open a compose Mail window, drag the little icon from the window header in Preview to the message pane of the email window... And that disgrace of an Error message. A small dissatisfaction, but did nobody test the Print dialog box? Not a finished OS.

These suggestions were only offered as workarounds. Apple needs to fix this, agreed.

The functionality used to be there in Preview because vendor PDEs were all dumped into the Printer Features PDE. Now, the PDEs are sorted the way the vendors intended, restoring the behavior from earlier OS releases.

Option 4 worked for me. It seems like it is something to do with annotation. I suspect it not so much that the programmer didn't program it right but that the management team couldn't run a preview upgrade at the same time as a system upgrade, and it all got messed up. Probably no working backup to revert to, probably no proper roadmap for the upgrade, probably looked at the apple community and blamed the programmers and now working on the next project. Also, the apple feedback system loos like its being cost reduced, more like microsoft now.

Is this issue ever got resolved?

I have been facing this issue for quite some time.

I am on Mac OS Catalina 10.15.3. I guess, it all started with the ugpraded to this OS..

No, I have the same problem with several Brother printers. Really disappointed in Apple. Fix this ASAP. I miss Steve Jobs. He would have beheaded any programmer who let this happen.

Really weird, but this worked for me too.

The workaround doesn't help me as I'm trying to use the printer dialog to only save as a PDF certain pages. It fails on all my printers, unfortunately, and I do not have an AirPrint printer.

Yes, it looks the same. The first document worked perfectly, but a second document didn't.

That did it, I worked on four other documents with perfect results. Now I only need to remember not to actually try to print to it!
