Where's the search function?

It used to be under the old iOS (which I'm missing already) you could just swipe to the right and get a screen with a search function. Now it brings up a weird Up Next and other little things but no ability to search the entire iPad (for apps and the like). Where is that function now? I tried swiping down (just get notifications) and to the left (get the camera). Swiping up does nothing.
