i updated my brother control center to be compatible with the new update but it is stateing it needs updating
i completed the update for my brother mfc-l2740 dw but the mac update did not recgonize it

Brother Control Center software is 32-bit and does not run in Catalina.
I am not sure if this is your problem, since you posted in the High Sierra forum, but still.
The good news is you don't need this either to print or to scan.
You just print normally, and you can scan using Preview or Image Capture very easily: File->Import From <scanner name>...
