Unable to open 3rd party software installer

I am attempting to download a 3rd party software to my iMac running Catalina. The installer will not open. I have opened security preferences. What steps do I need to take to have this installer open and run on my computer?

NOTE: I work for the company who created this installer and I know they application is safe. The installer is working on other devices. This appears to only be an issue with my iMac (also the only device running Catalina)

By any chance are you trying to launch a 32-bit app installer on your newly installed Catalina macOS? Here's an easy way to find out what 32-bit apps are installed on your iMac.

  • Click on the () in the upper left corner of the the display and click on 'About This Mac.'
  • Select 'System Report' on the window that pops up.
  • In the sidebar on the left side scroll down to the Software section and click on 'Legacy Software' to see which apps are 32 bit and will not run under Catalina without an update.

Notarizing Your Mac Software for macOS Catalina

September 3, 2019

As a reminder, Mac software distributed outside the Mac App Store must be notarized by Apple in order to run on macOS Catalina. To make this transition easier and to protect users on macOS Catalina who continue to use older versions of software, we’ve adjusted the notarization prerequisites until January 2020.

It isn't clear from the error message, but Catalina adds a number of security updates aimed at thwarting malicious content. Chances are the installer needs to be updated to comply with these latest standards, including signing the installer.

If your company develops the apps, then the developers should have access to the tools they need to comply with the security updates.
