No apps except Chrome will run after Catalina update - can't revert to TimeMachine backup

Yesterday I upgraded my MacBook to Catalina. I had El Capitan installed before this (my MacBook crashed the last time I tried an update (about a year ago) and I have therefore, stupidly perhaps, not upgraded since).

The installation was completed "successfully", but pretty much nothing actually works. No apps will open, the symbol just bounces in the dock for an unlimited time, Finder included (I get an error message about Finder that pops up every 5 seconds whether I choose Ignore or Report and nothing happens when I click it). The only thing that will run is Chrome. (This means I can't open Utilities, System Preferences or anything else, which is why I can't really provide any more detailed information about my Mac in this post – I can't access it from the Apple menu).

I thought I'd try to just revert it to the TimeMachine backup I did just before the upgrade, but apparently I can't – I get an error message telling me something along the lines of "the system can't be restored to this disk because HFS systems cannot be restored on AFPS volumes" (this is the best approximate translation I could manage, my MacBook's in Norwegian).

I don't quite understand this and am not sure what type of fix to attempt first. I'm guessing a clean install from Recovery mode is the best way to proceed first?

Would appreciate any help and input on this whatsoever!

Thanks in advance.

I solved this myself and thought I'd give an update here for anyone with similar issues.

I tried a clean install, then got stuck on the login screen for many minutes every time I tried (different problem from before - unsure if related). Tried a few fixes (had to force quit the Mac several times during this process since it got stuck on login every single time) for this and I think the one that did the trick was resetting SMC (holding down Shift + Control + Option + Power button for 10 seconds with Mac turned off, then rebooting). I have no clue why this worked but it did.

All my apps are now running just fine and none of my personal data has been impacted.
