what is the update required to connect to iPhone

iTunes on my iMac does not seem to need an update. Or, rather , I can find no indication or button to update. Still, I get a message when I plug the iPhone 8 into the Mac:

I do not wish to update to Catalina. Is that the update required?

Generally iTunes.
