Maps is using my location recently even though I did not open it

After updating to Catalina, it is now showing on the top bar periodically that App using location: Maps is appearing. I have not opened the Maps application so why is it checking my location so frequently?

I noticed on my menu bar that the Maps app, while it is not running, keeps checking my location every 5 minutes. I click on the location arrow in the menu bar, and every time it says it's Maps using the location services. I've confirmed the app is not running via the dock and the force quit menu. I like the Maps app, and would prefer to use it over other alternatives. However, as I am a bit of privacy nut, it concerns me. Unfortunately, unlike iOS, there doesn't seem to be any option to only allow the app to search for my location while using the app. I can't see any reason why the Maps app would need to check for my location every 5 minutes. Any idea why this would be this case? I use the app a couple of times per week. It would be really inconvenient to manually enable location services for the app in the system preferences every time I want to use the app, but I don't see any alternatives at the moment, other than simply using google maps or another alternative. Any suggestions are welcome. Thank you for your time reading about my relatively silly issue.

Maps app on my iMac How come since I updated to Catalina my Map app on the dock is showing? my location and have location service off. What else can I check to take of the location of my area? It never did this on Mojave. Thank you all for your help Frank

Mac OS Maps still not working Ever since the update to Catalina (on Big Sur now), Apple Maps has been busted. It's really a shame, because I used to use it quite often, and found it faster & more convenient than loading up Google Maps in a browser. I shouldn't say nothing has changed; I can actually bring up directions now, whereas not too long ago I couldn't even do that. The issue that remains is with "My Location". Even though I've made sure Maps is enabled in Security/Privacy Locatoin Services, it just hangs forever when I try to use my location as a starting point (see attached). Any recommendations appreciated.
