When I read messages on my iMessage on my laptop, my phone still has the message as unread. This is new since some recent update. Any fix for this? Other functionality seems to be working -- I can send/receive messages on my laptop and my phone. It is annoying though to be messaging on my computer and then look at my phone and see 'X' number of unread messages.

You mentioned this happened after an update. Did you update both your Mac and iPhone? If not, update both to the latest OS they can each go on and see if this helps at all:

Restart both your devices after that and turn notifications back on. See if they work as expected then:
