Auto hiding the Safari bookmarks sidebar on iPad in landscape mode

Hi,

Is there any way to auto hide the sidebar in landscape mode? It auto hides in portrait mode but not in landscape mode. One has to press the bookmark icon (in blue) to hide it (a small annoying issue) ?

Thanks for your help.

Welcome to the community. This is a Safari 101 question 🙂

You likely have the little “book” icon, to the left of the menu bar, currently highlighted in blue. Touch the icon, the highlight will clear, and the favourites list will disappear from view.

If you now open a new tab, the your favourites will not appear in the new tab.

The key learning point here is that this setting is “sticky”. Safari remembers how you had this set - the next tab you open will inherit the setting.

Hope you find this helpful.

I should have explained the issue more clearly.

When one taps de book/bookmark icon to access the list of bookmarks and then tap one of the bookmark address desired in the appearing sidebar, the sidebar then auto hides when the ipad is held in portrait mode, but does not auto hide if the same gestures are done in landscape mode. In the latter, one has to hit the book/bookmark icon in blue to hide the side bar. All I’m saying is that it would be nice if it could auto hide in landscape mode as well.

Thanks for your help.
