4.0.1 Errors! Post here!

So, this is the seventh time I've tried to restore. I keep getting error 9. I've tried both usb ports and another cable. Now I am trying a new user account. What else can I do? I've already called Apple and don't have access to a store. I get 3/4 of the way through the firmware update and it gives me an error. Very frustrating.

Anyone have the same problem? Suggestions?

I fixed the same problem with my Iphone 4 last night by opening up communications ports 80 and 443 via my Security Software under the Firewall settings. I found this fix on the Apple website listed under error 9 when I did a search for this issue. It worked like clockwork after I opened the ports and my phone is restored and updated. I didn't lose a thing. Hope this helps.

I too, along with so many had the dreaded "Error 9". I tried and retried a number of times to get past the error. I read that someone put their phone on a PC, restored it, and then hooked it up to their MAC to retrieve their backup. I tried that too with no success. However, while the dreaded "Error 9" appeared when trying to put the phone on the PC, I did try to restore again on the MAC after the PC experiment failed. I don't know if it was coincidence, or chance, but when I took my phone off the PC and back on the MAC and tried on the MAC it worked - finally. Maybe this will be a solution for others. Unfortunately, I'm still having dropped calls even when I'm not touching the phone. P.S. I bought the bumper when I purchased the Phone. I fear that something else is the problem.

Yeah, another one here. Ran the update to ios 4.0.1 on my iPhone 4 and it worked fine. Ran it again for my ipad and it worked fine. Ran it a third time for my wife's iPhone 4 and it failed while trying to update the firmware with error 9. Tried all the usual, 5 retries, hard reset, swapped cables, disabled antivirus and firewall, tried it on another computer.. Every time error 9. Annoying. Now she is left with a brick and I have a grumpy wife to placate. Called Apple and arranged an appointment at the store for a restore. Hoping that it fails as it seems to be a hardware issue and we'd rather have a replacement than a phone from a suspect batch. After all why would my phone and iPad update ok and my wife's phone fail ?

I strongly recommend that all people who are getting the errors wait untill a "off peak" moment to update. Every update is grabbed by the Apple Servers, obviously Apple have plenty of servers out there in multiple locations to allow users to download updates, apps and other data alot faster - more servers also means less downtime.

People need to consider the ammount of iPhone 4 and 3GS users out there. Over 3,000,000 iPhone 4's have been sold to date so thats over 3,000,000 people attempting to run the update; then you need to think about the 3GS users who are trying to update their version of the iOS. Remember, 3GS was the biggest smartphone sell of its time and is still running strong today so there is plenty of people out there.

Just keep it in mind people, will save you alot of bother.

I recommend you leave it untill tomorrow - thanks.

Hey I fixed the Error 9 issue on my Wife's iphone 4. I managed to complete the firmware update, it reactivated and now just restoring the music etc.

I have Norton Internet Security installed 2010 (NIS2010). Previously I right clicked on the NIS2010 icon in the system tray and chose disable firewall and disable antivirus, both popped up with a dialog offering to re-enable after 15 minutes which I chose OK button. Then I ran the restore and got error 9.

This time I went into the NIS2010 Firewall settings, chose program control and chose 'allow' for itunes, apple update, apple mobile device service and bonjour service. Then I disabled the firewall again and antivirus and REBOOTED the PC.
When I re-ran the iPhone restore IT WORKED !

I wonder if someone may have reported the iphone firmware update file to Symantec as malicious/virus. Or the Apple source IP and port is being blocked.

Interesting to know if you others are using Norton Internet Security ?

Just checked that the backup restored ok and it's fine ! Wife happy again.
Give it a try, hope it works for you.

Got bit by error 9 Saturday morning. Tried to restore 5 times after that using different dock cables, unplugging all other devices, restarting the computer, trying the other USB port, downloading a new copy of the 4.0.1 update, etc.

Ended up making an appointment at the Apple Store later that evening. They also ran into error 9 when trying to update my phone over there. After that didn't work, they swapped out my phone for a new one. I'm going to hold off on updating this new phone to 4.0.1 for a little while.

Thank you Apple Store in San Luis Obispo, CA for getting me in and out with a replacement phone in 20 minutes.
