4.0.1 Errors! Post here!

So, this is the seventh time I've tried to restore. I keep getting error 9. I've tried both usb ports and another cable. Now I am trying a new user account. What else can I do? I've already called Apple and don't have access to a store. I get 3/4 of the way through the firmware update and it gives me an error. Very frustrating.

Anyone have the same problem? Suggestions?

I updated my 3G with the new operating system and have encountered many, many problems. I'm beyond the point of thinking any of them can be solved--or that Apple has any interest in any of their customers beyond those who are ready to spend new dollars on the latest, greatest model of any of their products--but I did want to document them for everyone in case it helps.

1) First, right after I updated the OS, I realized the update had wiped out hundreds of pictures of my newborn baby--but only those taken after some specific date that, as yet, I have not been able to determine. The same thing happened with contacts I'd added to the phone after some specific date. Normally, none of this would've been a problem because I frequently backed up the phone. However, when I called Apple and they told me about the "restore" capability, I found out that iTunes wasn't backing up my phone and the last version I had was from June 2009. Thankfully, the Norton360 Anti-Virus software that I curse on a daily basis had saved all the pictures.

2) Every time I synchronize my iPhone with iTunes and then close iTunes, it gives me a message that I have changed my settings and asks if I want to keep them. The problem is, I haven't changed my settings, so I never know what accepting or rejecting them does to my phone.

3) My battery life is crap now, v. the previous OS. I go from full to empty in a matter of an hour sometimes, even when I'm in Airplane mode.

4) The "GPS" function is crap now, v. the previous OS. It doesn't follow my progress when I'm driving or running any more.

5) The phone operates MUCH, MUCH more slowly now, v. the previous OS.

6) I STILL have not been able to figure out how to properly back up my iPhone to iTunes.

I'm sure there are other problems I've forgotten, but those are the big ones.

I have become increasingly disenchanted with Apple--particularly with the access to customer service, or lack thereof, for products that are increasingly complex and expensive. I am not likely to buy another iPhone unless a) they get a lot less expensive and b) they start treating their customers with the respect they deserve--and for which those customers pay dearly.

TEMPORARY RESOLUTION TO ERROR 9

I normally do not support resolutions as such but Apple has an issue and until they get it fixed it's either a)you have a phone that is stuck in a loop, b)take it back to the store and hope they have another OR c)resolve the issue yourself below. Good Luck!

1. Download TinyUmbrella (make sure Java is installed on your computer)
-you can visit this site on how to use TinyUmbrella
www.funkyspacemonkey.com/tinyumbrella-save-iphone-ipod-touch-ipads-shsh-blobs
2. I had to click on "Kick Device Out of Recovery" before I could follow the steps.
3. Once complete, open iTunes.

It worked for me, hope it works for you and hope Apple gets the issue resolved.

i updated my 3Gs last night 7/18- and had no problems at all with the update- however, today i used the camera- and the picture quality is HORRIBLE!!
i noticed a significant difference in the speed of the actual picture taking- but every single picture was blurry...
NO, i am not expecting SLR quality pictures...i have one for true photography- but to see this extreme downgrade in quality is really a disappointment...
am a little apprehensive about the arrival of my iP4 that i ordered on 7/2...hmmmmmm

Tried time and again and kept receiving error 14. Someone posted this may be caused by a corrupted update file and indeed! - it was. Downloaded another sample of the .ipsw file and replace the first one under Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates. Then repeated the whole restore process and it worked!

Got my iPhone back.

Just downloaded the iTunes update 9.2.1 thinking... ah, they've sorted it out. But no. still the same error 9. In total, have tried on 4 macs, 1 PC running windows XP, various USB ports on all machines, 3 different USB cables, DFU mode, tried to directly update from older 4.0 ipsw file, and quite a few hours of my time.

Not going to try 3rd party software incase it invalidates warranty - my iPhone 4 was minutes old when it was knackered with the 4.01 update.

Tired of it all.

I used the RecBoot 1.0.2 "Exit Only" app and that mostly solved the problem -- THANKS jeewizz101!!! The only problem was that something still messed up and I didn't get the apps back on my phone when I resynced -- so I had to manually put the apps back and move them back into their folders, which was somewhat painful. But at least I have a working iPhone again. Very frustrating though.

FIX FOR ISSUE ERROR 9: (worked for me)

Ok so I don't know why this worked, but it did! I kept getting the iPhone cannot be restored and it would fail halfway through and give me the error 9 blah that everyone kept getting. I tried everything and nothing worked. So finally I was looking at old forum posts and came across someone mentioning a similar issue (with a previous iOs) and how they resolved it.

So here's what I did (Mac OS X):

Go to ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates/
Right click on the iPhone_....4.0.1.ipsw file and click Get Info. Under Sharing & Permissions change it from Read & Write for your user to Read Only. Make sure the changes save. Now try and run the restore again and it SHOULD work!

Lets see if this works for anyone else!
