Getting books from Finder into Kindle

I'm restoring a new phone. I'll leave aside how really bad the process software is, and get to the problem. On my previous phone I had a bunch of books, 30 or so, that were in the Finder in Files under Kindle. I could add books there, and delete books. I see the books in the Finder, but when I sync I don't get the books into Kindle.

Could someone tell me how this works?

Thanks very much.

So does it do it, but a bit roundabout. You upload the file to TextEdit or some other open folder. You then download it onto the phone. Then use the Share function from Files to Kindle and the file appears.

No idea if this was the cause or just a coincidence, but immediately as I did that for a single book, all the books in the Finder under Kindle reappeared on the phone as if they just decided to sync across after about a three hour wait. This restoring from a Mac is not what it should be be, except it's super fast, much faster than an iCloud restore.

Thanks again for the suggestions.
