I added gift cards to my child's apple ID on their device. How do they access those funds?

My son has an apple ID for under 13 and uses an iphone 6. I added 2 gift cards on that device but now when he tried to buy something it says it can't. How does he use those funds? Do I need to turn off the parental approval setting?
