Is the Catalina Books app a total disaster for audio books?

I don't understand what happened. Smart playlists are gone, can't edit meta data, can't delete since tracks, can't store files on external drive. Why did they basically destroy something that worked? The Books app is pretty much useless for audiobooks. I wish there was another way to manage audio books and sync them onto my iPod Nano,
