Trouble Printing from Mini to Brother

I have a Mac Mini 2016 hooked to a Brother HL-2370DW via USB. 90% of the time when I try to print, the computer won't wake up the printer. I've tried deleting the printer and re-installing, but the problem persists. When it happens, I just have to fiddle with it...plug, unplug the USB, delete the print job and reprint, all sorts of things. I just want it to print when I hit print. Is it the case that the Mac Mini (just upgrade to Catalina, but had this issue with Sierra) is just not compatible with the Brother? Is there another model of monochrome laser that is a better match?

Mac mini, macOS 10.14

I have the 2270 on Wifi, has worked flawlessly from day #1. What firmware version is it on? Should be 1.35, printer driver should be 1.6, update here https://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadlist.aspx?c=us&lang=en&prod=hll2370dw_us&os=10060

If the problem persists, try disabling printer sleep from the printer configuration web page. If nothing works, set it up on Wifi. Good luck.
