Hi Lou,

Thanks for reaching out in Apple Support Communities. I understand that after updating your iPhone it's frozen on a screen with a spinning gear. I can see why you'd reach out about this behavior; I'd like to help. First, try these steps to force your iPhone to restart:

  • "iPhone 8 or later: Press and quickly release the Volume Up button. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Then press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo."

If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won't turn on or is frozen

If you continue to see the screen with a spinning gear after restarting your iPhone, you'll want to use these steps to restore the device as new using recovery mode. Please not that this process will erase all personal data from your device:

"If you backed up your device, you can restore your data and settings after restoring your device.

    1. You need a computer to follow these steps. If you don't have a computer, borrow one from a friend, or go to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.
    2. Make sure that your device isn't connected to your computer, then choose your device below and follow the steps:
      • iPhone X or later, and iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus: Press and hold the Side button and one of the volume buttons until the power off slider appears. Drag the slider to turn off your device. Connect your device to your computer while holding the Side button. Keep holding the Side button until you see the recovery mode screen.

    1. Locate your device on your computer. When you see the option to Restore or Update, choose Restore. Finder or iTunes will download software for your device. If it takes more than 15 minutes, your device will exit recovery mode and you'll need to repeat steps 2-4.
    2. Wait for the process to finish. Then you can set up and use your device.

If you can't update or restore your device using recovery mode, or you can't use recovery mode because of broken or stuck buttons, contact Apple Support. Then follow the steps to set up service for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch."

If you forgot the passcode for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, or your device is disabled

If you have a recent backup for your device, you can use these steps to restore it once the steps above are complete: Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup

Best Regards.
