Has apple provided a way to turn off the delete confirmation popup, or is this another one of the ways Cupertino infantilizes its customers by not allowing them to choose?

You are not addressing Apple here. If you don't seem to like a feature on the iPhone, then you have the option to provide feedback directly to Apple here, Feedback - iPhone - Apple. This is a user to user support forum and Apple does not participate here.

To be honest, it was user feedback that changed the system, due to the number of people complaining about accidentally deleting messages on their devices.

Why do you feel the need to question the OP? If you can’t provide the technical support asked for, then go back to your latte and stay out of it. I too would like the choice to shut off the delete confirmation. And the why is none of your concern.

Sometimes asking "why" questions helps people figure out an alternate suggestion.

You can let Apple know what you'd like to see here:

Because 1.) I’m neither an idiot nor a child, and I am perfectly capable of making and accepting responsibility for my own decisions, and 2.) because in the age of forced two factor identification, my inbox and message box is overrun with messages that begin. “Your code is”, and 3.) I’m not willing to cede to Cupertino the right to determine what is an important message.

the more universal issue is whether Apple should be able to set defaults on my devices without asking, (for instance, the sudden appearance of something called “memojis”, a neologism that isn’t even in apples spell check dictionary, presumably on the assumption that i need pictures of purple unicorns to make my life complete. If i were an pre-adolescent girl, that might be true, but Apple shouldn’t force them on me.

Ummmm....yes. Any company can control how their creation works. So if they decide they want certain things to be default then yes they absolutely have that right to do so. The phone is not custom made to your specifications. You have the ability to customize some of your settings within the perimeters set by Apple (or any company honestly). Short of you creating your own OS from the ground up there isn’t a single device you would have 100% free control over every aspect of.

Sure... sometimes. But more often these “community forums” are filled with people who would rather chastise others who would dare question Apple’s wisdom than those who can provide any meaningful response. Yes I know I can send Apple my feedback directly. The reason folks come here is to *try* to find if some other “user” has found an answer to their question. If not, fine. But simply butting in with “why would you want to do something ridiculous like save 3 steps when you might possibly lose valuable info if you make a mistake” helps no one. Alas it’s a growing “feature” of our social media based society though. With the good, comes the stupid and irrelevant.
