How do I get the switch control recipe to stay active when the iPad enters sleep mode?

When the iPad goes to sleep, switch control reverts to scanning instead of continuing to use the recipe. How do I stop this from happening?

I am using switch control recipes using a Bluetooth connected single switch interface.

I know that I can change the settings so that the iPad does not Auto-Lock. This course of action drains the battery too quickly for our purposes, even when brightness is reduces and all other available battery saving measures are employed.

Thanks for the help in advance!
