The error you're getting is typically related to the temperature of your device, if you're using your device in extreme cold it may need to warm before all features are working as expected. Is this error only happening when in cold weather, or are you seeing it indoors in warm temperatures as well? My face ID just died this week and I can't reset it. My face is with parameters and then is says, move phone higher, move phone lower. Spent 3 days and this is all I get. Have an appointment Jan 2 with Apple.
