wifi error saying "kernel Error storing postMessage 74"

dear Apple community,

since upgrading to Catalina I have issues connecting only at work. Everywhere else where I use wifi-networks there is no problem. On exactly the same office others on other operating systems have no problem. My iPhone SE with the latest iOS also has no problem connecting. I use the Personal Hotspot to connect my MacBook Air now.

I deleted these files to see if that would make any difference:

preferences.plist

NetworkInterfaces.plist

com.apple.wifi.message-tracer.plist

com.apple.smb.server.plist

com.apple.AutoWake.plist

com.apple.airport.preferences.plist

I also created a new, fresh location in the Network System Preference.

When I open Console to read wifi.log I see the message

<kernel> Error storing postMessage 74

Unexpected payload found for message 74, dataLen 104

often mentioned. This also sounds bad:

<airportd[242]> ERROR: rapportd (321) is not entitled for com.apple.wifi.join_history, will not allow request

<airportd[242]> ERROR: sharingd (361) is not entitled for com.apple.wifi.join_history, will not allow request

The user interface shows the wifi icon in the menu bar endlessly trying to connect. With patience it sometimes connects and then I can load one or two pages. Then it stops again. The browser says "Server not found". But there is an IP-address for my machine in the 192.168.etc range.

Any suggestions anyone? Anything greatly appreciated. The whole morning I could not work because of this.

Yes! I found the ultimate workaround for this issue. Just get some USB wifi-adapter that adds an extra interface in the network preferences panel. Turn off the wifi interface of Catalina and select the network interface this adapter gives you. I am now back online. No need to downgrade the OS. Just some ugly, clumsy, cheap USB thingy dangling from a USB port. It is already stable for half an hour. If I don't come back here it probably continues to work well.

Nevertheless, Apple should fix this in Catalina!

Good afternoon ReindeR Rustema,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

I understand since you updated to macOS Catalina you have not been able to connect to your Wi-Fi network at work.

"Everywhere else where I use wifi-networks there is no problem" - I'm assuming this means at home. But is there more than one Wi-Fi network you can try at work?

Based on the changes you have made to your system, I would first recommend creating a new user account to test Wi-Fi connectivity. If you are still unable to connect to the internet, you may need to get some help from your network administrator at the office. Share the error codes you are seeing in Console with them. This person may need to reset the modem/router for the office as one of the troubleshooting steps. Or, they may have other security measures in place.

Take care.

Hey sorry for late response. Sadly I do not have access to the router.

But I've tried other things: on the weekend I removed everything on my MacBook (wiped out HD) and tried a fresh install and... nothing. Same issue.

Tried to rollback the upgrade to Mojave: no deal, apparently whenever the installer tries to run a clean install with that version, it fails at some point in the middle of the process (it was super fun to waste a couple of hours on this). Then tried to do all over again, removing everything, creating new partitions and stuff for Catalina. The fresh install goes perfectly, the connection works... at home. The issue still happens at the office but something has changed finally. Now it connects and I'm able to browse internet but after a few minutes the connection drops and I can see in the logs the same errors as before. Then I turn off the wifi, wait a few minutes and guess what?! It works again for minutes.

There's something obviously wrong between Catalina and the router but it's really hard to tell what.

Hope it helps.

Hey there,

Sorry to say but... I gave up. Removed Catalina and went back to Mojave. I'm going to wait until there's a new update or something important from Apple to use new OS version.

On Mojave everything is working as it should, my wifi is just doing its job.

Good luck for you. If you need help on how to go back to Mojave, I am using a guide I found on iMore "How to downgrade from macOS Catalina back to macOS Mojave".

Have a nice weekend.

Today I brought a Late 2014 Mac mini with Catalina to the office. The same issue!

On my way home I passed by a computer shop and bought a tp-link "AC1900 High Gain Wireless Dual Band USB adapter" which I also need in a certain room at home to improve reception.

Just installed it and it feels like an improvement in speed at home. Also, it uses a completely different network interface. You can also choose what kind of connection it is.

This might work. Next week I am in that office again and will report back.

I called Apple. I reached second line with this issue. He was very helpful but in the end the conclusion is still that Apple products work as promised. Just not with this network, so the problem must lie with this network configuration. The recommendation is a downgrade until the problematic network software or hardware is upgraded.

Which makes me wonder if the three of us are all connected through the same network hardware and software. The hardware on my side says 'Unify' from Ubiquity...

oh, by the way. I tried fixing that Wifi-network. I found a network wifi-switch with a few dozen access points connected to it. The network admin left a note on how to reboot it in case of trouble. After waiting for the wifi-users to leave the office/going all into a meeting, I did a reboot by unplugging the thing and waiting for a minute and rebooting it. After a few minutes the wifi-networks where up and available (a blue light on those white discs on the ceiling). All machines reconnected automatically, except my MacBook Air with Catelina.

I gave up this morning after struggling for two hours with this. I just quickly popped out and bought a Thunderbolt 2 cable to connect to a nearby iMac 2011 with an old MacOS that did have a working wifi connection. At the end of the day I tried your suggestion with another, new user. Again, no connection. I switched back to the usual user account. Then I launched Wireless Diagnostics as you suggested, to try the tools in it. I had tried to generate a Diagnostics Report before, but that would make it hang endlessly. Just like trying to make a connection makes the wifi-menu hang.

This time all of a sudden my wifi connection started working again! Now on wifi in the train, which works flawlessly. Tomorrow another office, or a library, etc. No problems elsewhere.

At first I thought it was because of the Thunderbolt connection, but the Network Order had Wifi listed on top. I could disconnect the Thunderbolt cable while the wifi network connection would stay up! At least for half an hour, then I had to leave.

Will give an update next time I am in that office!

Hi Thiago, can you connect to other wifi-networks without problems? Perhaps we can find similarities in the problematic wifi-networks we are trying to connect to.

I know that the maintenance of my problematic network is lacking. The company that services this network has not visited the building for at least half a year. It is a professional network with a few dozen nodes, access points.

Their reply to a request for service will be that my machine is the problem (one from outside, not under their service contract). None of the other employees have complaints after all.

Nov 1, 2019 6:21 AM in response to ReindeR Rustema

Hi ReindeR,

Thanks for replying. So yes, I can connect to the wifi at home but, after Catalina upgrade, the wifi at work doesn't connect (works for everyone else here but they are using Windows). We do not have access to our router so changing it wouldn't be an option.

What I do at my office is to use my iPhone as Personal Hotspot so I can work ( it is sucking my T-Mobile LTE :-( ). Funny thing, sometimes even the connection to the iPhone HotSpot fails, but it has started to happen right after Catalina upgrade.

Nov 1, 2019 6:27 AM in response to thiago_ochsendorf

Indeed, same situation. I also used a few Gb outside of my data bundle because of Personal Hotspot on my iPhone.

Can you include a picture of the access points? Perhaps that will indicate what brand it is. On the ceiling in my office I see those white discs with a little blue led indicating power. Will upload a picture later. I also have access to the room with all the networking and will find the brand of the hardware there.
