How to upgrade reminders in iOS 12?
If that's not possible, reminders is useless to me now. I'm not buying a new phone just because Apple can't be bothered with back compatibility.

That statement doesn’t mean that reminders no longer work. It means that if you didn’t heed the warning and you upgraded, then reminders in iOS 13 won’t sync with reminders on iOS devices unless they are also upgraded.
I upgraded my iPhone XR and my iPad Air 2 to iOS 13. My Mac which is running 1.11.6, El Capitan, is syncing my reminders just fine because I heeded the warning and didn’t upgrade the reminders app on the phone or the iPad. You may not have seen the warning, or just glossed over it, but I paid attention to it and decided not to upgrade the reminders app.
My reminders sync on all three devices and in iCloud.com.
I don’t have all of the new features in reminders, but that wasn’t as important to me as making sure that all of the reminders continued to sync.
Backwards compatibly with what? Reminders works just fine in iOS 12. You can still use them. You just can’t use all the new features that are available in iOS 13. That is nothing new for any software upgrade.
My Mac is running 10.11.6 which is 4 OS’s behind. It sill works just fine, but I don’t have all of the features that I would have in Catalina. My Mac won’t run Catalina anyway or Mojave for that matter. I don’t feel like a Apple is forcing me to run out and buy a new Mac.
Your original post NEVER stated that you upgraded reminders in your phone. In fact, your devices line is showing that you are running iOS 12. I said that reminders still worked in iOS 12, and they do.
Next time you might want to clarify what you mean and leave the threats to Apple out of your post.
First and second sentences are correct. As the titles indicates, I was asking if the reminders (app) can be upgraded in iOS12. My phone is running iOS 12 (as your impressive observations skills have confirmed). That was the question. Everything else is your assumption and an unfortunate waste of both our time. As demonstrated by the first replier, the logical step to assume the upgrade occurred in another device is not too much of a stretch.
Third sentence is incorrect. I'm not threatening anyone. I am stating a blatant flaw in the upgrade process of the reminders app and why that, in my opinion and in what concerns me, is no reason to upgrade a phone.
I had another snarky response prepared here and posted it, but I admit that it was the wrong thing to do and I would rather not be involved in that kind of thing. Even though you didn’t read my original response, I apologize for my nastiness.
I’m sorry that the reminders thing caught you by surprise or screwed things up for you. Whether you believe it or not, I have been there myself and it kind of s*u*c*k*s getting caught in a situation like that.
You should have paid attention to the warning you got when you upgraded the reminders on your Mac or iOS 13 device.
You can't undo the reminders upgrade.
Thanks Tim, very helpful answer. My fault. Let me proceed to self flagellate.
