I recently got a software update notification on my MacBookPro11,5. I downloaded and installed 10.15 Catalina and now when the computer goes to sleep, I have to turn off the computer and turn it back on to get back in--what is my problem?

When you say you have to turn off the computer - why do you? does the system lock-up or give you an error message?
if yes to the above I would reset your NVRAM and SMC:

ok, definitely give the NVRAM and SMC reset a try.
The reason I have to turn the computer off and back on is that it freezes in the sleep mode--in other words the touch pad or none of the keys brings it out of sleep--I then turn it off with the power switch and turn it back on. If I take a break and the computer goes back to sleep--I have to repeat the same process to begin work again.
