I made an app, CurrentKey Stats, that's in the App Store that gives Spaces persistent names. It also tracks how you spend time across Spaces and your Apps, and gives you a way to jump directly between them.
The app is free to download, here is the direct App Store link. It's homepage is CurrentKey.com.
I launched the app in May and just launched version 2.0. Because macOS APIs are limited, the names stay in the app/menubar and don't show up in Mission Control. But they are persistent.

Hmmm... not sure what you are asking here.
If you add + a Desktop in Mission Control it takes the name Desktop 2.
Use Mission Control on your Mac - Apple Support
If you move the Desktop2 to the left it will get renamed Desktop1
If you want to rename the directories themselves baked into the macOS— this is not advised.
