Would a "Mac Pro" be connected to a "LG UltraFine 5K" Monitor, and get a 4K image?

Yes.perhaps...... But....

It also depends on the video/graphics card in the "Mac Pro" and the type of connection to the "LG UltraFine 5k Monitor"

which is limited to Thunderbolt 3 or USB-C Only. You may be able to find an adapter that converts either DisplayPort, MiniDisplayPort or HDMI 2.0 to USB-C, potentially..but there is no chance of finding an adapter that'll convert anything to Thunderbolt 3. Usually you have to have the Thunderbolt 3 controller and hardware on board to start out with. and no, you can't

get an add-on card, because they don't exist. So: If you have a fairly recent Mac Pro (the round cylinder type) then the answer is

"Yes, probably.....". If you have the silver cheese-grater type (as I do)...the answer is "well....only if you can convert it to USB-C, otherwise no"

If you want 4k and a big enough monitor, LG (and other companies) make them in sizes from 27" on up....... I have a 43" LG monitor which is about 2 feet away from my face. It does 4k and HDR just fine. Dunno about Dolby Vision though..., or HDR 10 (whatever that is)....

$1,800 for a 27" monitor seems way too pricey for me.

Good gracious, you can almost get a 65" 4k tv for that price........

when checking display resolution, be sure to look in:

 Menu >about this Mac > (System Report) > Graphics & Displays.

These two lines tell the REAL story:

Displays:

Display:

Resolution: 2560 x 1600

UI Looks like: 2560 x 1600

Framebuffer Depth:

Not the line "UI Looks like".

When you select SCALED, it does not change the overall resolution, but instead scales ONLY text UP until it "looks like" the size that appears there. It does NOT (as many users mis-understand) change the overall resolution.

Hi john b,

I've got the apple 2 to 3 T. adapter, works fine. I got a chance to get hold of a "LG UF 5" for a good price, and I thought, I will be up-grading soon, if something good comes my way, so one could say 'I took advantage in the present, for a better future', eyes wise? I've got terrible sight.

Thanks a lot!

sure....sounds good to me. I don't have Thunderbolt in any way. and I don't have an UltraFine 5 monitor. so I can only do 4k at the max via MiniDisplayPort or HDMI. Oh well, works for me. It's still an LG monitor, works with Mac fine. and it's about a foot and a bit from my face. I had a monitor stand which I used with my previous monitor so I still use that. I'd go with what Grant Bennet Alder said.
