Screenshot not working

Since updating to Catalina I can't take any screenshots. It doesn't save them and I get this message. I had to take a picture. I tried restarting in Safe Mode and restarting again and it still doesn't work.

Thanks for replying.

So I'm using the screenshot app the mac comes with. I've been using it for years without a problem. I've tried a few things and got some info. First I tried saying in different places. All the defaults work (ie desktop, clipboard, etc). But I always had my screenshots saved directly to one of my external drives (I labeled it screenshots). That way I can always just look for my last screenshot on my phone and whatnot. But now it doesn't want to save any screenshot on any of my externals.

So that's the issue I have. I can't save my screenshots anywhere outside the internal hard drive or iCloud. I mean I can make an alias and move the images afterward, but that's an extra step than I previously did not have plus if I screenshot a lot it will take up a lot of space in my iCloud account. I rather they exist in my external in one of my dropbox folders. Nowhere in my external drives do they save. The image is snapped, but no file is saved.

What can I do?

I've been doing this for some time. Don't you think it's a security privacy option?

After I updated I got a message from a third party browser about accessing one of my drives to save a file. I wonder if it's the same thing here where that window doesn't pop up to ask me whether I'd like to save in the external drive?

The option to save at any location is inherently there. I don't know why you can't. Why wouldn't it? It's a file like any other.

Sorry. Quick update. Every time I log out (lock screen) or put my computer to sleep the same problem happens. So I just left the folder in iCloud with an alias so I can move the screenshots to another folder afterward.

It's annoying, but I guess at least I know it just can't be done...or it can, but then it doesn't allow me later. Oh well. I find that the things I enjoyed and worked in the past versions of macOS tend to one day not work and then sometimes when they make an update they start working again. This is the former. I just have to work with what I have.
