Sounds when Connected to Bluetooth Headset

Hello

On the iPhone 4 I just noticed that my text message, calendar reminder, and email "sounds" do not play through the external speaker when I have a bluetooth headset connected. Instead, these sounds play through the bluetooth headset.

This is a problem and not something I recall from other iPhones.

Is anybody else having this issue? FYI, the bluetooth headset is a Jawbone Icon.

Thanks!

The same thing happens to me on my iPhone 4, just as it did with my 3G. Though Im thrilled that the volume of the alerts is far, far lower than it was on my 3G - incoming emails, texts, calendar reminders would just about made me deaf when i was on the phone. It was excruciating.

However, people are reporting that the new 4.0.1 update has increased the volume of many iphone functions, so unfortunately this may become a big issue again.

Blackberry will give you audio alerts when connected to Bluetooth. I was able to find a workaround for making the iPhone do the same.

While your phone is connected to Bluetooth, click on the Music app. Click on the icon next to forward arrows. It's the symbol that looks like a rectangle with a pyramid in it. This will allow you to switch the audio from the iPhone handset and the connected Bluetooth device. Select iPhone and you should be able to hear when you get emails & text messages. Unfortunately, you will have to do this every time your phone connects to Bluetooth.

I'm really glad you posted this trick DAfromNY. It got me thinking and I found a one step easier way (for me anyway) to do it. Once your BT headset (or car stereo, etc.) is connected, double press the home button and flick it twice right (moving to the items to the left). Next to the volume slider, if the rectangle with the triangle is blue, it is sending the sound alerts to a BT connected device. If it is, you can click it right there and quickly switch it. Please note that the button won't even be there if no Bluetooth devices are connected. Last note, you will have to manually change this setting each time your BT device connects :-( Hopefully Apple will add a setting in the BT area where we can default to sound alerts to phone or ... BT connected device. Thanks again DAfromNY!!

On iPhone 6 when the screen is locked you can slide up some controls from the bottom. Here you will find the name of your headset on the bottom right. Click on that and it appears you switch your headset connection between A2DP and simple-phone mode (where alerts, notifications and so on are played in the iPhone speakers). I can't say if a similar control is found on iPhone 5 or earlier.
