Smart card stops working, requires reboot.

My USB smart card reader stops working on my MacBook Pro. When you plug it in, the red light comes on for a few seconds and then goes away. The only way to fix it is to reboot, which is not practical because it happens so often. So I have to run a Windows VM 24x7 to work around the issue.


This issue was reported back in 2015 and still persists to this day with no work around. In older versions of MacOS there was a workaround, I don't recall the details but something to the effect of restarting some service but it is not possible now. See the following thread for more details. If Apple is not going to fix this, it really would be awesome if they provided a work around for the latest OS, this is untenable.
