Locking audio to clip not in timeline?

I am editing a music video and there was no timecode sync, so I am post syncing the clips that need sync (most of the clips are not tied to the vocals)

I would like to lock a clip to my audio, but the clip is not in the main timeline, it is above it becasue I am not sure what part of that clip I will use in final cut.

There are certain clips that I want to make sure are locked to the audio especially after I sync them manually.

It seems I can only lock audio (command-option-click) to clips in the main timeline?

Thank you for your patience, I am not very conversant in fcpx

The best way to do this is to select the video and audio clips in the browser and create a Synchronized Clip.

This will then be a single clip on the timeline with no problem keeping it together.

Alternatively, if you already manually synced them in the timeline, you could select both clips in the timeline and create a Compound Clip.

You synchronize clips in the BROWSER (not in the timeline)

You can treat a compound clip like any other clip. If you need extra material to be able to do transitions, make the compound a little longer in the first place and trim it in the timeline. Also if you need to you can go inside the compound clip to make adjustments too (Clip->Open Clip). Click the little back arrow above the timeline to return to the project.

Wait: you synchronized more than one clip with video and are trying to cut between them?

Maybe I should have realized that before, sorry.

What you want is to create a multicam clip.

In a multicam clip, you have angles, and switching/cutting between them is as easy as pressing the angle number.

Search for "MacBreak Studio multicam" on the web to find several episodes of the MacBreak Studio series where Steve Martin and Mark Spencer show this feature.

As a bonus, after you learned the basic, don't miss this "Final Cut Pro X under 5 minutes" video, titled "4K Multicam Magic":

You still don't have the audio on the primary storyline, but leave that for now.

If you cut the clip the way you describe, yes it will drop down onto the layer above. It's connection point to the clip on the primary storyline is fixed. If you nudge clips around it will NOT change that connection point. The application will move the clip vertically out of the way if something wants to move between that clip and the primary. It will not be shuffled horizontally by other clips. .

Thanks. Creating Synchronized clips is great, but I also want to be able to lock them into a position in the timeline. When I synchronize the clips to the original audio, that takes care of audio portion, but as soon as I move the clip (and the audio as you pointed out), then everything is out of whack, because there needs to be just one audio track, in this case the music song?

Is there a way to do this?

Thanks very much

I have my clips synchronized and on different layers. How do I cut between them without the clips magnetically positioning onto the main story line once I trim them?

The option I was thinking was using the blade tool and then turning off the video in the rest of the clip I am no using, but it seems a bit odd this way? One thing is I dont know an easy way to reposition a blade cut if I want to make a small adjustment after the fact?

As with many thing fcpx, I am sure I am not doing it the right/best way. Thasnk very much for your support.
