The update screen shows I still need this security update but in About this Mac is shows I am current. I didn't think it finished loading. Since "downloading", I get kicked off the internet all the time, I get the beach ball and frozen out of searches. Essentially my laptop is not working most of the time. Please help.

Try restart in Safe mode to just see if that helps whatever you have running. While in Safe mode, there are several things that one could look into; but even if you only start to Safe mode and then re-start to get out of it, that can help.
