Red exclamation mark ❗️ on watch

I got a new iPhone. I was trying to get it paired with my watch. My watch needed an update. While trying to update it I got a ❗️ on the screen. Followed instructions on website. Instructions to hold down button and crown until Apple icon appeared didn’t help. What do I do now?
