Heart rate monitor not working

I have had my series 5 watch for about a week and it only records my heart rate 2 or 3 times a day. I know the monitor does function because when I workout it records my heart rate as described in Apple literature. It also works when I touch the heart app but I feel like it should be recording my heart rate periodically through the day and night. Any ideas? Isn’t watch possibly defective?

This is happening sporadically during walks, running and while using fitness +. Sometimes, once I realise it is not recording my heart rate I can trick it into doing so by using my Heart Rate app and forcing it to take a reading, which is then recorded on the workout app, but not always. When I check under my watch, the green lights are always on, just not recording my heart rate. I have already made sure that my watch is not in power saving mode in the workouts app and I have unpaired and repaired my watch twice with the same issue still happening. Can anyone help? I’m at the point I think it must be a fault with the watch but wanted to check here first. Thanks in advance

Apple Watch problem with heart rate monitor Is it a common problem that the heart rate monitor stops working continuously after a period of time? I’m doing interval training and it stops tracking for many minutes at a time. I’m considering purchasing a new one but not if this happens with all apple watches.
