Plantronics V5200 issue with iOS 13

I have the following issue: my BT headset Plantronics V5200 makes the volume indicator on my iPhone pop up now and then whenever there is a screen-change. Events that have no sound associated will still make the volume indicator (with BT icon) flash up and then fade away. Swiping through open applications, changing chats in WhatsApp, browsing through pictures, sending an Email, an incoming message banner: all of these can trigger the volume pop-up. Nothing really fails, but it is just very annoying.

(I do not have my fingers near the volume buttons, and the phone is new and clean. Also the issue only presents itself when the BT device is connected)

I have been in touch with Plantronics support (now: Poly). They have been very helpful, even replaced the headset, but the issue remains.

I have raised the issue with Apple support, they are now looking into it.

This posting is my attempt to tap in the collective expertise of the iPhone users, and maybe track more occurrences of the issue.

Both iPhone and headset are at the latest iOS / firmware:

iPhone 11 pro 256 Gb iOS 13.2

Voyager 5200 on firmware 464

Plantronics hub v3.15.0 build 448

All kinds of resets and reconnects have been tried.

With or without the Plantronics hub app makes no difference.

The earpiece has been replaced.

Other BT devices (AirPods, JBL speaker, my carkit) do not trigger this issue.

The issue will show on all iPhones running iOS 13.x.x here at home: an iPhone X and an iPhone 8 Plus.

That very iPhone X, when it was still running iOS 12.x, did *not* show the issue.

All in all this looks to me like an issue that relates specifically to this BT device, in combination with iOS 13. Since it has run perfectly before on iOS 12, I hope Apple will fix this screen-bug.

Meanwhile I am open to any suggestions you may have to try and resolve the issue.

Thank you.

(And I am still hoping for truly persistent HTML in my Email signature. Different topic 🙂)

I have exactly this same issue. In addition to what the OP wrote, I have this issue with all builds of iOS 13 up through 13.2.3. This began when I first used a new iPhone 11PRO MAX/512. That was my first experience with iOS 13, so it was difficult to determine whether this was a hardware of software issue. Apple replaced the phone and recommended a clean system install rather than using my back ups (You iPhone power users will understand how frustrating and time consuming that was). Everything was fine until I paired my Plantronics V5200. The random volume jumps (up and down) occurred when the headset was paired even if it was powered down.

I unpaired the V5200 and then paired a Plantronics Edge with exactly the same outcome. Unless I unpair the Plantronics headsets the problem persists. I have not installed the Plantronics Hub app on the newest phone.

Plantronics first level tech support suggests a work around of using the Accessibility->Touch->Call Audio Routing function to switch call routing to "Speaker". This does nothing to solve the problems detailed above, but it does seem to stop the Plantronics headsets' tenancy to randomly drop and reinitiate connections during a call.

I intend to attempt to reach a higher level of support at Plantronics to discuss this situation after the holiday weekend.

Hi again, Audioguy,

Not much I can add to my original post, just that my casenumber with the Poly / Plantronics helpdesk is 07367578.

Also let me repeat that I had used the BT earpiece for 7 months without issues on my iPhone X. Then I bought an iPhone 11 Pro on iOS 13. I started to use the Plantronics earpiece on that new phone, that is when the issue I describe started.

My wife started using my iPhone X and also converted to iOS 13. When - as a check - I connected the BT earpiece to her phone it showed the issue too. Mind you, that earpiece - phone combination had never shown the issue while on iOS 12!

Anyway, I just hope the Apple people will take notice. As far as I can see the issue started with iOS 13, so they should fix it.

Every time an iOS update presents itself I hope this will be the solution, currently I am on iOS 13.2.3 but no luck yet.

Thx, Dirk

I have the iPhone XR, running iOS 13.3. I have the same issues with the little white bar going up and down and randomly changing depending on what app I am using. I also have found that the voice dictation has changed since upgrading to iOS 13. Previously it would work flawlessly, but ever since upgrading it is horrible with the Plantronics 5200. The voice dictation would keep on stopping after just a few words. I do not have this problem with other brands of Bluetooth, or using the phone directly without any Bluetooth. I feel the problem is on Plantronics side, and surprised they have not pushed out an updated firmware yet. I own two of the Plantronics 5200 Bluetooth, and I’ve been till this point they’ve worked flawlessly for years.

My 8 did the same thing with the annoying volume slider on whatever the last update was before 13.3. Updating it to iOS 13.3 fixed nothing. New iPhone 11 Pro put into service yesterday. Same thing happens.

I have three Voyagers. One is newer, less than six months. They are not reliably staying paired with the 11. I am pretty torqued about the performance and will call Plantronics, in the meantime, trying to isolate whether it's all three of them or just two.
