Mac Pro (Late 2013) SSD not showing up/

Hello,

My Mac Pro ( Late 2013) is having an SSD problem. It suddenly stopped showing up. I have a bandaid on the problem by booting to an external drive, but would like to know if there is anything I can look up in the system report or tests I can do besides the diagnostic test that the Genius Bar does to try and track down the issue. I did take it to the Genius bar and the hard drive was not detected on their diagnostic test. The options were to send it in for repair or get a new computer. If it is a simple ssd failure I don't mind purchasing another hard drive, but would rather not start putting money into a rabbit hole trying to figure out what is wrong. Is there something from the system report I can attach to help? I am currently running Mojave and need to stay on it because of compatibility issues with some software I use.

Check the Apple System Profiler to see if the SSD is physically seen by the system. In the left column of the System Profiler click on either "SATA" or "NVMe" to see if the SSD shows up in the right pane. I don't recall whether this computer uses a SATA or NVMe SSD. If the SSD is not listed in one of those locations, then most likely the SSD has died.

You can also try running this command in the Terminal to see if the SSD is seen. The System Profiler may be the better option.

diskutil list internal

The SSD is the most likely failure if the SSD is not seen, but the GPU Board could also be at fault since that is where the SSD is mounted. From my experience the SSD is the most likely since it is very sensitive to power issues. I've seen a number of SSDs from various manufacturers disappear/fail without any warning.

One footnote on what Smokerz wrote:

** Provided your firmware is up to date.

Not having up to date firmware may preclude updating the firmware with a non-Apple Internal SSD drive.

It has been suggested that if you get stuck, you may be able to get firmware updates installed by using an External drive, and no one has written back to says that suggestion does NOT work.
