text message sending to wrong number for contact

Lately (the past month or so), sometimes when I try and text message someone, the messages are being sent to a phone number under the contact which is not their mobile number. This happens from the same text dialog where the person texted me, and where I have texted them on their mobile number before.

NOTE: This happens with text messages, not iMessaging. The person I am texting has an Android phone, not an iphone.

An example: I have a contact who has 3 phone numbers configured for them. Mobile, Home and Work. All previous text messages have gone to their Mobile number. This morning, this person texted me as they often do, and I see the new message in the same conversation list as all previous messages, but when I reply, I get a message back from Rogers saying I just texted a landline, which is the Work number for my contact. Tried again, and again it says I just texted the work number. If I go to the contact, then select Message from there, I again see the same message history, but when I text this time, it goes to the correct number (or at least I don't get a message saying I texted a landline).

I saw this once a few weeks ago with another contact, but in that case, the text went to his email address rather than his phone. In that case as well, I still see the text message I sent in the text application, same conversation history as all previous texts sent.

Anyone else seen this or any idea how to fix?

Regards,

Denise.

Hello djanse,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you're having trouble with Messages being sent to the wrong phone number or email address from your Messages thread. I'd be happy to provide a few troubleshooting steps.

First, if this happens again, try deleting the contact and re-adding it using the steps here: Manage and delete contacts on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

Since you mentioned this has only occurred with SMS messages, be sure to have completed any carrier updates: Update your carrier settings on your iPhone or iPad.

If this continues to happen with only SMS messages, you may want to reach out to your carrier for further guidance.

Take care.

I am having the same problem since I updated to iOS 13.1.3. An example is, I have a contact's personal cell phone set as the default. When I try to send a text to that person, the iPhone will sometimes send to the work cell or try to send home phone number (land line). This also happens on incoming texts. Sometimes when I receive a text from a contact that I text frequently, the I.D. on the text come through as the contact person's husband who is only listed in the email addresses on the contact's record and is a separate contact.
