bluetooth failing on mac mini

Both my magic mouse 2 and keyboard have stopped connecting to my 2016 mac mini. I had issues before with poor motion response on the mouse, but since I upgraded to Catalina bluetooth has stopped altogether.

I managed to get it working for long enough to access the bluetooth debug menu and rest bluetooth, but then it stopped working again.

You have any USB 3.0 external drives connected to your Mac Mini?
