I use my MacBook pro with the lid closed and two monitors. I have an external Mac USB keyboard, too. Before the Catalina upgrade, I was able to wake the computer using the external keyboard. Now, after I put the MacBook into Sleep then reconnect to my monitors & keyboard the keyboard does not work. The monitors work fine and the mouse can be used to wake the Mac. But the keyboard does not work until I perform a restart.
Any thoughts?

Brand new 2020 MBP 16" not working.
2 official Apple keyboards sadly not working. Detached everything and reboot, reinserted etc. All the USB ports work with other devices fine. The ONLY thing that worked for me was an SMC reset. What a royal PITA! Everything worked fine under Sierra, High Sierra etc. I have 6 Macs in my house so it is definitely something that got changed with Mojave and is continued over to Catalina.

I have exactly the same issue with my MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2017) and my older MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2014), both connected with an Apple USB external keyboard using the Dell monitor as USB hub.
Also experiencing this issue on a 2017 MacBook Pro on 10.15.1using an LG display which the Apple Magic Keyboard connects through. Occurs about once a day, though a restart will usually fix the issue.
I have this same issue on my 2018 15" Macbook Pro running Catalina 10.15.3
Same issue here. Deep sleep, no external USB devices work.
I guess then just for me. I was doing exactly what you described many times a day. Since the update, not once did I have an issue.
I am still experiencing this problem, even after the latest OS update.
I have to reconnect my USB keyboard every wake up... (BT mouse works fine) What is this discussion thread for? Does apple notice the problem?
I have this exact problem on a 2019 15", running version 10.15.4 and it is still an issue. Weirdly not a problem in bootcamp. Apple are dropping the ball all over the place.
Me too! I'm running a Dell USB C monitor, with its own USB2 ports, one of which is used for the keyboard. On wake up from sleep, the keyboard does not work until you plug & unplug the USB C cable from the MacBook twice. (MacBook Pro 13" 2016 Touchbar
Catalina 10.15.1). No issues at all before Catalina upgrade.
Same problems roughly since Catalina upgrade :( Worked fine half a year before that.
Gmobi USB hub connected to Macbook Air 2019 ... EIZO monitor and USB mouse (tried several of them) connected to the hub. Mouse stops working 90% of times when I disconnect the hub.
Sometimes switching the hub to other USB-C port (have two of them) helps ... 20% of times. Restart helps 100% of times.
Very annoying ... have to go to meetings several times every day ... disconnect, reconnect, restart ... I'm starting to remember how I felt when I used to be Windows user :))
Apple ... it's been several months ... do something, please!
I have 4 MacBook Air 13" Early 2015 laptops that are having an issue with the externally connected Apple Model A1243 keyboard and external mouse not functioning intermittently. All 4 laptops have recently updated to Catalina 10.15.3
Reseating the keyboard and mouse USB plugs does not get the keyboard or mouse to work.
After closing a number of applications and reseating the keyboard it did start working again.
Restarting the laptop also works to get the external mouse and keyboard to function as well.
Problem continues to come back.
Wireless mice are not affected
Same as everyone else.

USB keyboard is connected through an Anker USB-C Hub with PD and HDMI.
Keyboard functionality is regained by unplugging and replugging it after waking the system.
Same issue here on 2019 16" MBP. Happens after sleep 20-30% of the time. Restart always fixes temporarily.

Upgrading to the 10.15.4 beta solved my issue with USB devices not being recognized after sleep, for what it's worth.
