iMovie drop down menus not working

Since upgrading to Catalina, iMovie drop down menus are not working. If you select any of the top dropdown they appear an illegible pink or purple color. and do not respond to a click. I have tried rebooting the iMac and deleting and reinstalling iMovie but no joy. Cannot even access the force quit on the apple drop down when this happens. A power off reboot with the power switch ins the only thing that restores everything. Does anyone have any clues as to the problem? Thanks in advance for any help.

Try going to System Preferences/Accessibility/Displays and unchecking the boxes that say "Increase Contrast" and "Reduce Transparency".

Completely correct at System Preferences / Accessibility / Displays and unchecking the boxes that say "Increase Contrast" and "Reduce Transparency" works.

But the changed menu setting causes the contrast to be reduced in general. Can't it be true that Apple can't make a software update for Imovie?

You might try putting back the check in just the "Increase Contrast" box, and/or using the "display contrast" slider that is right under the boxes in the Accessibility/Displays box. See what effect that has.
