My iPhone 5 won’t update past iOS 8

So I heard about this important update to keep my old phones working... I have a few around that I use as sound recorders etc.

But my iPhone 5 won’t update past iOS 8. The current y2k-type problem supposedly isn’t fixed until iOS 10.3.4... and the Apple bulletin suggests I should be able to get there normally, by updating through the app store?

iOS updates are never performed through the iOS App Store. They are performed either over-the-air or using (a current version of) iTunes (or Finder if you use MacOS Catalina) as follows:

Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

There is no iPhone model that was ever produced that is maxed out at any version of iOS 8.

Sorry, I said App Store because I’m old, I was referring to the internal Software Update function in the iOS Settings app.

Anyway, iOS Software Update panel was telling me that the update available was only iOS 8.4.1, so I was confused, but when I told it to go ahead, it seems to have completed the update and now it’s offering me to update to 10.3.4... so it was apparently an intermediate step.

(in the olden days, Software Update was its own function in the Apple Menu up to OS 9 I think, then it was replaced in that menu by the App Store when updating moved there... and so I occasionally refer to built-in Apple software updates as the App Store.. a strange quirk I know)

It has nothing-to-do with the Y2K, it's a GPS rollover bug but anyways, if you cannot update over the air on the phone directly, try to update with iTunes on a computer instead:

I already solved it by running software update twice.

Again, it's the GPS rollover, no idea what you are talking about, but you can update with iTunes, it's usually the safest method to update. Newest / Latest for the iPhone 5 is 10.3.4.
