I know this seems simple, but I can’t see how to select and modify just part of a song in GarageBand. Like bring down the applause at the end of a live recording or pull a fade between songs.

select Show Automation from the Mix menu.
click once in the track to display the automation line, and then click and drag it up or down to change the volume
