I have a message on my iMAC 27" 5k 10.14.6 indicating that a software update is required to connect to my iPhone7. What upgrade is this? Is it is an upgrade to 10.15 Catalina?

No. Its an update to iTunes on your Mac. Its a software update for iTunes to work with iOS 13.2 now.

The message should have come up when you plugged your iPhone in to access in iTunes.
